RAST \u2013 Transforming Educational Practice for Active Participation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to the international page of the RAST Project, a research initiative of the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb, dedicated to strengthening citizenship education and fostering active and democratic participation through the transformation of educational practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RAST Project aims to assess the level of citizenship education competencies among students enrolled in early childhood and teacher education programmes, as well as among practising early childhood educators and teachers. The research includes an analysis of study programmes in Croatia and internationally, the development of research instruments, and the collection of perspectives from children, pupils, teachers, and early childhood educators on activities that contribute to achieving the goals of citizenship education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the findings, a theoretical model of competency development will be designed to provide a foundation for educational programmes intended for both initial education and continuing professional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is implemented over a four-year period, from 2025 to 2029, and comprises seven work packages (WP1\u2013WP7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose of the project<\/strong> is to strengthen the professional role of teachers and early childhood educators in fostering and developing active citizenship competencies among children and pupils within the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the research<\/strong> is to determine the level of citizenship education competencies among students of early childhood and teacher education programmes and among practising early childhood educators and teachers; to identify and classify factors associated with the development of active citizenship competencies; and to develop a theoretical model that will serve as the basis for educational programmes designed to support their further development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specific Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1.<\/strong> To conduct an in-depth analysis of existing initial education programmes for teachers and early childhood educators, with particular emphasis on citizenship education content and learning outcomes, and to examine the self-assessed competencies of students enrolled in teacher and early childhood education programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.<\/strong> To analyse existing forms of professional development for teachers and early childhood educators in the field of citizenship education and examine their relationship with the level of professional competency development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.<\/strong> To conduct a comparative analysis of historical and contemporary pedagogical models in order to identify their key characteristics and principles that align with the aims of citizenship education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.<\/strong> To investigate the key challenges and needs of the Croatian education system in the context of developing teachers\u2019 and early childhood educators\u2019 competencies for citizenship education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.<\/strong> To identify the pedagogical and ethical challenges associated with educating teachers and early childhood educators for citizenship education in online learning environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.<\/strong> To develop a conceptual model that reflects the interrelationships between initial education, professional development, and citizenship education competencies, and to design educational programmes aimed at enhancing the integration of democratic values, human rights, intercultural dialogue, sustainable development, and digital participation into everyday educational practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
